After 14 years, PCOS officially became PMOS. Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome.
Why the change? Researchers say the old name made it sound like it was just about cysts on the ovaries. The new name better reflects the condition’s effect on hormones, weight, metabolism, mental health, skin, and the reproductive system.
This is a complicated day for many in our community.
For some of you, that acronym has been on your medical charts since you were a teenager. It’s been the explanation for the irregular periods, the weight you couldn’t shake, the years of doctors not taking you seriously, the diagnosis that eventually led you into the world of fertility care.
Some of you may feel relief that the name finally reflects what you’ve been trying to explain for years, that this is a whole-body hormonal and metabolic condition, not just a story about cysts on the ovaries.
Some of you may feel frustrated. You’ve spent years learning a name, building community around it, advocating for it, finally getting people to recognize it. Watching it change isn’t simple.
Some of you may feel uncertain. Every one of those reactions is real, and every one of them belongs here.
Whatever you’re sitting with, AllPaths will always be here for anyone affected by this condition.
