Dear RNE Community,

Resolve New England (RNE) is troubled by the comments about surrogacy made by Pope Francis earlier this week and strongly disagrees with them. We want to send a clear message that sweeping generalizations like these are harmful and inappropriate. RNE’s mission is to provide support and information related to reproductive health and ALL family building paths. We are also dedicated to advocating to make these paths more accessible and to protecting the rights of all involved. We are unwavering in this commitment, and it feels more important than ever.

People turn to surrogacy to try to build their family for various reasons, including those who do not have a uterus due to cancer or other medical conditions, LGBTQ+ people, and people who have suffered devastating recurrent pregnancy losses. One of the highest privileges of our work is personally getting to know people as they seek resolution to their family building challenges. As such, we have been able to bear witness to how incredible and meaningful surrogacy can be.

As always, those people trying to grow their families, and those who have struggled in the past, are at the center of everything we do. The parents and children whose own families were built through surrogacy, as well as those currently on this path, have been at the forefront of our thoughts this week. We recognize that comments like those made recently can be very painful, so to you we say that we honor your families, your strength, and your love. RNE is here for our whole community, always.

Sincerely,

Kate Weldon LeBlanc
RNE Executive Director
